Lightning Being Sold To Red Sox Minority Owner?

According to TSN the NHL is currently brokering the sale of the Tampa Bay Lightning as well as the land around the St. Pete Times Forum from OK Hockey to Boston hedge fund manager Jeffrey Vinik for $170 million.

Vinik is 50 years old and is a partner in the Boston Red Sox ownership group. His net worth is estimated at $500 million.

Speculation inside the Lightning organization is that Vinik’s first order of business would be to drastically cut payroll. This will certainly fuel the “Trade Vinny” rumor mill once again.

It would suck for Bolts fans if someone came in and summarily cut salary, but it could give the team a fresh start. In any case, at least they would get to keep their team, and Jim Balsillie would still be right where he should be… Far far away from ownership…

  2. Watson says:

trading Vinny would destroy the future of the team long term, maybe Vinik is like Balsille with his intentions??
