November Showers as Hockey Talks Continue to Sour – Blackhawks Final Games

As I turn the calendar to November, I have yet to enter a fantasy hockey pool. I have yet to attend an NHL game. I have yet to blow off a social event to watch my beloved Blackhawks. Nope, instead I have been more interested in checking the website of my rec hockey league to see where we rank in the league (we’re 4-2 for the record).

Yes, I know both sides are talking and a lot of it presented in the media is pure propaganda from the respective sides.

The waiting game continues, as does the mission I undertook to analyze the full 82 game schedule of the Hawks. But first in related Hawks news, the “Blackhawks” challenged the “World” in a charity game on Friday at Allstate Arena.

This idea was spurred from former fan favourite Adam Burish. A personal favourite of mine as well as I am forever in his debt for the 4 Coors Lights he gave me one night.

A bored Burish sent out an email to his cup buddies with a plan. His thinking was he’d hear back from the boys in a couple of days. He did not anticipate the rapid response as apparently they were just as bored/frustrated as him. This idea escalated as quickly as an alley altercation with local Channel 4 News team.

The result? Raising over $300,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charity with an entertaining reunion of the 2010 Cup Champion Team as well as friends around the league. Way to make the best of a bad situation helping such a great cause!

Now on to the schedule:

Fri Mar 1 – Wild @ Blackhawks - Because I’m so starved for fantasy hockey, I wanted to check in with my 1st round draft pick from a couple years ago in my keeper pool. Mikael Granlund is fitting in nicely with the Houston Aeros with 10 points in 7 games, leading the team in scoring and named October’s AHL Rookie of the Month. Who’s third you ask? Yep you guessed it, Brian Connelly, former Rockford Ice Hogs captain.

Sun Mar 3 – Blackhawks @ Red Wings – I don’t have any Red Wings on my fantasy team and it will remain that way.

Wed Mar 6 – Avalanche @ Blackhawks – Are you an avid Avalanche fan who continues to have interest in their former players? Well then you already know what Owen Nolan’s up to don’t you smarty-pants? For everyone else, he’s now hosting a hunting and fishing show called Sportsman360TV. Fact: he points at his prey before he strikes.

Fri Mar 8 – Blackhawks @ Panthers – Also a fact: Kris Versteeg used to go to the The Wieners Circle in Chicago with Adam Burish for late night entertainment.

Sun Mar 10 – Blackhawks @ Flyers – On November 8th Eric Lindros will be inducted in Philadelphia’s Sports Hall of Fame. This is a no brainer but the bigger debate is will he ever land himself in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Tue Mar 12 – Canucks @ Blackhawks – Fast-forward 10 years, who will be a better goalie Cory Schneider or Eddie Lack?

Thu Mar 14 – Blackhawks @ Avalanche – You check out that Owen Nolan hunting/fishing show yet? I wasn’t lying about the pointing –

Sat Mar 16 – Blackhawks @ Stars – Stars fans, did ya catch Derian Hatcher in that last clip? Derian played opposite of brother Kevin in what was his only All-Star game appearance. Hawks fans I’m sure remember Derian fondly from 1995 when he took out Jeremy Roenick’s knee. Needless to say if the brothers were even in a fight I’d be routing for Kevin.

Mon Mar 18 – Blackhawks @ Blue Jackets – The best off-season move during this lockout might not be the acquisition of Nick Foligno or Brandon Dubinsky, it very well could be John Davidson. You have to appreciate the Blue Jackets surrounding their franchise with great hockey minds like JD. He will be their President of Hockey Operations giving Scott Howson some much needed help turning the team around.

Thu Mar 21 – Blackhawks @ Kings – You really do have to give Dean Lombardi a pat on the back for having the guts to reacquaint the “bad boys” from Philly, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. Don’t be alarmed when you pat him on the back and you hear a sigh of relief though.

Fri Mar 22 – Blackhawks @ Ducks – Bob Murray, “whatever, we don’t need that Schultz kid anyway”. Justin Schultz has been named the AHL Player of the Month and has 12 points in his first 7 games for the Barons.

Sun Mar 24 – Blackhawks @ Coyotes – In all seriousness, the worst part of this lockout is reading headlines like, “Phoenix Coyotes layoff staff due to NHL Lockout”.

Tue Mar 26 – Kings @ Blackhawks – Speaking of Mike Richards, I’d like to personally thank him for helping me win my fantasy keeper pool this year. He was a solid addition down the stretch.

Fri Mar 29 – Lightning @ Blackhawks – Anders Lindback, one the Lightning’s latest to head overseas is slated to play in Finland. But don’t take it from me, check out fellow HI Blogger WB Philip for all your TB news and updates.

Sun Mar 31 – Blackhawks @ Red Wings – I don’t like the Red Wings but will we ever see a cooler unit than when they would ice Kozlov, Fedorov, Larionov, Fetisov and Konstantinov? Scotty Bowman credited “The Professor” Larionov for this strategy, which was used by the Soviet Red Army teams in 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

Mon Apr 1 – Wild @ Blackhawks – Reports say that Zach Parise and Ryan Suter only joined the Minnesota Wild because Craig Leipold promised them that they would be able to rename the team and design their new logo in 2014. April Fool’s! Man, did I get you there.

Thu Apr 4 – Predators @ Blackhawks – Word has it that Craig Smith has been working on perfecting his bar down goals on empty nets during the lockout.

Sat Apr 6 – Blackhawks @ Predators – … he’s almost nailed it –

Sun Apr 7 – Blue Jackets @ Blackhawks – Rick Nash is the all-time leader in points, in second is David Vyborny. If you own a David Vyborny jersey raise your hand.

Fri Apr 12 – Blues @ Blackhawks – Long time Blues forward Keith Tkachuk’s nickname throughout his career was “Walt” which was given to him by the one and only Eddie Olczyk. The more you know.

Sat Apr 13 – Blackhawks @ Blues – There is a rumour that during an off-season Tkachuk’s scale tipped the 300lb mark. So for those in Winnipeg concerned about Dustin Byfuglien’s meal plan during the summer, don’t worry about it, Keith was able to balance double cheeseburgers and hockey too!
Now that I’ve completed the daunting task of breaking down every single game that was supposed to be played by the Blackhawks, we can move on to more relevant topics. Ummm… like more charity games and how many goals Kane scores in the Swiss league.

I will continue to update you on prospects as well as your Rockford Ice Hogs who are currently on a 4 game winning streak. Hopefully Eli can weigh in on the games he’s attended if I can track him down.

Non-Hawk Hockey Topics on the Brain: It looks like the Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings will be cancelled this week. That’s too bad, the 24/7 documentary leading up to the event won’t be produced which was always entertaining with all it’s bleeped out swear words. I really was looking forward to seeing how many one-liners they were able to get out of Mr. Personality, Phil Kessel.

Non-Hockey Topics on the Brain: I pose this question to you – with the baseball playoffs now in the books what other sports are you following to get your sports fix? I know I will be following the NBA more closely. I would love to hear your feedback.

    Holy Chips,

Owen Nolan is still alive. Great work TC. It’s been a boring Fall so far let me tell you. I’m sitting here watching some great OHL hockey though – Guelph and The Dirty Shwaaa. Guess that will have to keep me busy.

Keep up the random facts kid.
