After a 101 point season last year, expectations are high for the Los Angeles Kings right now. They entered training camp with a significant buzz in the air…and a myriad of kids looking to earn one of the few roster spots available.
Dean Lombardi has spent the better part of the last four years acquiring a plethora of future talent – or assets, if you will. And over the last two weeks they’ve all been on display at the Kings training facility in El Segundo, CA.
Roster cuts began yesterday, after the team reached the mid-point of their pre-season schedule - three games down and three to go. In the interview series below we catch up with several of the team’s high end prospects who have been trying to make an impact in camp.
Interview with Thomas Hickey – first round draft pick in 2007, he talks about his relationship with Colten Teubert, playing for the Manchester Monarchs, keeping up with his junior team, the influence of Ron Hextall and more
Interview with Jordan Weal – the Kings 3rd round selection in 2010 talks about his junior team (the Regina Pats in the WHL), playing in the outdoor game, his mindset in camp, thoughts on other Kings prospects (Teubert, Nolan and Kozun), the playoffs, good movies, etc. Plus, his connection to Rob Blake.
Interview with Brandon Kozun of the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen - the reigning scoring champ in all of junior hockey (and Kings 2009 draft pick) provides his thoughts on rookie camp and breaks down the two-game Rookie Series played against the Phoenix Coyotes.
Interview with Kyle Clifford – the LA Kings 2009 second rounder probably has the best shot at making this year’s team. He played last year for the Barrie Colts in the OHL. Here he helps give a preview of the Rookie Series with Phoenix and provides his thoughts on how things are going so far.
Interview with Corey Elkins – a big center in the Kings organization, he led the Manchester Monarchs in goals and points last year…as a rookie! In this interview he talks about why he signed in LA and we test his purple and gold Kings knowledge.
Interview with Jordan Nolan – another big, strong kid from the OHL. Here he taks earning a contract with the Kings, his toughness vs. Kyle Clifford’s, being teammates with Jake Muzzin, playing for the Ontario Reign in the ECHL and much more.
Interview with Nic Deslauriers – a defenseman from the Quebec league (QMJHL). Get his perspective on Kings camp, his reasons for dropping the gloves for a scrap during the Rookie Series, how Drew Doughty has helped him, etc.
