Red Wings Rally To Beat Blackhawks 3-2 in OT
Pavel Datsyuk scored the game-winning goal at 3:08 of overtime as the Detroit Red Wings (26-14-1), who rallied from a 2-0 deficit, came back to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 at the United Center. The Red Wings are now in a three-way dance for first place in the Central Division with the Blackhawks (who got [...]

3rd Time the Charm? Canucks vs. Blackhawks First Round Preview, Predictions
The hockey gods have wasted no time re-igniting the bitter playoff rivalry between the Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks, pitting the rivals opposite each other in a playoff series for the third year in a row.
Good News, Bad News and What Could Happen
As the road to the playoffs gets bumpier let’s take a look at what was, what is and what might be. The good news is Patrick Sharp supposedly will be back before the end of the regular season. Fortunately Sharp is not forced to have surgery. The bad news is there isn’t anyone on the [...]
Tampa Bay Lightning Week In Review
Game 66: Lightning 1 – Capitals 2 SO “Winless in Four” Alex Ovechkin assisted on Washington’s only goal in regulation, then scored in the opening round of the shootout to give the first-place Capitals a 2-1 victory over the slumping Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night. Alexander Semin came up big for the Caps for [...]
2011 NHL All-Star Game Mock Draft
One day before the 2011 All-Star break celebrations, I participated in a NHL All-Star mock draft with a fellow Montreal Canadiens Blogger, James Usypchuk, from The Power Play. You can click here: 2011 NHL All-Star rosters to see the players that will participate in this year’s All-Star game in Raleigh, NC. James had the first [...]
A Series of Defining Moments
Barry Trotz often speaks of a game’s “defining moment”. Last night was a series of defining moments- one of which included the sold out crowd at Bridgestone Arena. The first defining moment of the night came after Chicago scored a power play goal at 14:59 of the first. To that point, the Predators had played [...]
Predators Burn the Blackhawks in a Shootout 3-2
For two periods, the Nashville Predators were outplayed by the Chicago Blackhawks and found themselves in a 2-0 hole going into the third period. Fortunately for the Predators, the hockey game lasted three periods, and tonight went to overtime and a shootout before the Predators prevailed to win 3-2. With this win, the Predators have [...]
Hawks At The Half: Ball of Confusion
Watching the Blackhawks this year, the Temptations’ hit of the ‘70s comes to mind. “Ball of Confusion” was a throbbing, chaotic collage of music and voices that spoke of a world changing faster than humans could comprehend. An appropriate soundtrack for a Hawks’ team that, halfway through the season, is often chaotic, and has changed faster than either the fans or the team itself can comprehend. So what’s next?
Dazed & Confused in Chicago | The Red Machine is Coming
One Team Came Ready To Play The first ten minuts or so of the first period was fairly open with each side trading chances. The Hawks got their legs under them first and put the pedal to the floor. Tilting the ice in their favor and forcing the seemingly apathetic Blues to play most of the [...]
Chicago Two Months On: Doctor Jekyll & Mister Hawks
December dawns, and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks have, if their recent record can serve as evidence, found firm footing. After staggering through the first half of November going 2-4-1, they scorched through the next two weeks at 5-2-0 (though their loss in Calgary was, to pardon the expression, a flame-out). Evaluating their status at the quarter pole, this column suggested, “If the Hawks can find strength in their recent adversity, and come back from their road trip with a solid harvest of points, December will look a whole lot better.” They did, and it does.
Predators Win Second in a Row With a 4-3 SO Win Over Chicago
When a team endures a losing streak, one of two things can happen. They can hang their heads and limp along; or the losses can be extremely clarifying, causing a team to focus on what it takes to win games and get back to those fundamentals. For the Nashville Predators, the latter has occurred, as [...]
DAILY RUMORS: Players Most Likely To Be Dealt & Not Dealt
We at HockeyIndependent.com want to be your resource and filter for what is going on in the NHL. We try to disseminate the noise in the blogosphere. We don’t look to to attack those sources, but to question the veracity of the rumor with cold logic, hockey smarts and knowledge. To do that… we have [...]
Introducing the Blues Fan Poll – Weaver Out? Door is Open.
As time passes here at Hockey Independent I would like to add a few weekly themed segments/blogs on the happening of the St. Louis Blues. I would like to introduce the Blues Q & A. Where three time as a week on various social networking platforms I ask Blues fans questions on the pressing issues [...]
Bittersweet: Passing the Cup to a new but worthy champion
One week has elapsed since the end of the 2009-10 NHL season. Watching last Wednesday evening’s proceedings at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, I was reminded once again that one of sport’s most magical, frozen moments is when the captain of the newly crowned champions raises the Stanley Cup over his head. As 22-year old Jonathan Toews lifted [...]
What Went Wrong: Analyzing Luongo, Questioning Character and What Needs to Change
IT WAS the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. The Vancouver Canucks 2010 season has been a tale of two teams, and unfortunately for the Canucks their regular season performance was far superior in comparison to their playoff success.
BATTLE STATIONS: BLACKHAWKS-SHARKS WCF ’10
When Troy Brouwer scored the first goal of the Blackhawks’ 5-1 series clincher, he put the game of hockey in perspective. With his father recovering from surgery to alleviate a blood clot in his brain, Brouwer showed courage, coming back from his absence while he stayed with his father, and getting his game in focus. “It feels great,” he said. “Sitting out those couple games gave me a little bit of perspective and thankfully the coaches stuck with me. I didn’t want to disappoint them or the team or my dad.” Now the perspective switches to the Hawks’ second consecutive WCF and a first playoff meeting ever with San Jose.
This Conference Final brings together the number one and number two Western powers, whose final standings were separated by a single point. Tough to imagine two clubs more evenly matched.
The history between the Hawks and Sharks, then, is limited to their regular season contests, though there are some interesting relationships.
Never Say Die – Canucks Set to Battle Blackhawks; Extend Series at GM Place
The Canucks had no choice but to step up and prove their critics wrong, after talking about all the right things throughout the playoff series against the Blackhawks, the Vancouver Canucks executed their game plan to perfection, jumping on the favoured Blackhawks early and often on Sunday. After Brent Seabrook’s early wrist shot surprised Roberto [...]
De Ja Vu; Canucks Look to Avoid Elimination at Hands of Blackhawks Inside the Madhouse on Madison
The Canucks’ have shot themselves in the foot so many times this series, it is simply not possible for them to collectively harm themselves again, their metaphorical feet have already been blown right the [Gretzky] off.
