A Scary Moment, A Serious Debate
Tuesday night had all of the makings of an important game for the New York Rangers. It was the opportunity to defeat a division rival directly above them in the standings, to jump into a playoff position and to keep the momentum rolling in one fell swoop. The Rangers accomplished all of those things by [...]
The NHL’s Next “PR Offensive”
“As I said we know that no words of apology or explanation will soften the disappointment. I read the letters, I followed the tweets, I read the blogs: we have a lot of work to do. The National Hockey League has a responsibility to earn back your trust and support, whether you watch one game [...]
Backchecking: A sort of open letter
To Gary Bettman, the NHL Board of Governors, NHLPA Management and NHL Players It is with great frustration and anger that I write this letter. I speak for myself, but I am guessing that many fans are feeling the very same things that I will innumerate here in this letter — the purpose of which [...]
Crombeen Is A Solar Bear
Another Tampa Bay Lightning player has signed a lockout contract with an ECHL team. Forward BJ Crombeen will play for the Orlando Solar Bears, presumably making his debut on Saturday night at the Amway Center in Orlando. Crombeen has practiced with the Minnesota Wild affiliate. Crombeen is on the NHLPA negotiating committee. The five year [...]
Sandy Pens Her Own Chapter Of The Lockout Saga
It’s been two weeks since superstorm Sandy paid a most unwelcome visit to the eastern seaboard. People in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are still trying, to varying degrees, pick up the pieces of their lives. For some, it’s figuring out which day they can get gas. For others, who have lost everything, it’s [...]
Too Many Defenseman? Czech!
I need to take a break from my game-by-game breakdown because SOMETHING happened in regards to the Hawks. Nothing crazy… but something nonetheless. Today the Blackhawks signed Michal Rozsival. I did not see this coming at all considering who is realistically vying for a spot on the blueline this Fall (… and by Fall, probably [...]
The Blackhawks Awkward 20
If you would be so brave as to follow me into Narnia… or Never Never Land… or whichever Fantasyland of your liking we can all just go pretending that all is well in Hockeyland. We won’t worry about those meetings in Toronto where Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr take their respective warriors into the battle [...]
Money Matters
On July 13th, the NHL owners made their first Collective Bargaining Agreement proposal to the NHLPA. They shot for the moon, seeking to redefine hockey related revenues and slice the percentage the players received so the owners got more of the pie. They sought to cap contracts, alter entry level contracts and unrestricted free agency rules, [...]
NHL IDIOCRACY: NHL’s Fat Cats Getting Richer vs The NHLPA Plan
NHL IDIOCRACY NHL’s Fat Cats Getting Richer & The NHLPA Plan Part 1 of an ongoing series as the NHL vs NHLPA might spin wildly to a possible lockout this season… There seems to be a panic across the media and fandom of an impending lockout. That there is a rough tough NHL ownership who [...]
Howard Making a Case for 2014 Sochi Olympics
Jimmy Howard and the rest of his Detroit Red Wings’ teammates were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 20, but that hasn’t stopped Howard from continuing his season by representing his country. Howard is currently the number one man between the pipes as a member of Team USA in the 2012 IIHF World [...]
The Boogaard Aftermath
This week, The New York Times published a 3-part series about the late Derek Boogaard. Regardless of what team you root for, the whole series is a must read and as incredibly heartbreaking and disturbing as it gets. The third part that ran on Tuesday, December 5th laid out Boogaard’s life in the grips of [...]
When the Music Stops
Athletes are different. From an early age, their physical prowess separates them from the crowd. They are faster, stronger, and more driven to succeed in their athletic endeavors than their peers. They are told they are elite. They stand out from the crowd. Once a athlete begins to play their sport, great attention is given [...]

The Fear of Never Ending Litigation Could Force a Culture Change in The NHL
My belief is players are the ones which will be able to change the culture of the NHL if they have a clearer understanding as to the consequences of their actions. Many believe the key is not to count on a new awareness by players but rather focus on the punishment. There is good reason [...]
Better late than never: CBA perspicuity arrives after Kovalchuk decision
It is ironic to pause on Labour Day and analyze what the NHL and NHLPA have finally accomplished. More than five years after the current CBA was finalized and now, approximately two years before its expiration, the two sides have finally completed a drawn-out, laborious process to partially rectify what they failed to get done during bitter [...]

Despite several reports indicating that former Major League Baseball Players’ Association leader Donald Fehr has been named executive director of the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA), Mike Ouellet, chief of business affairs at the NHLPA, called the reports “a little premature given the process. No recommendation has been made to the executive board yet.” He also refused to comment on whether Fehr was the leading candidate for the union’s top job.

Another can of worms: Arbitrator upholds rejection of Kovalchuk mega-deal
Arbitrator Richard Bloch ruled earlier this evening that the 17-year, $102-million (U.S.) contract signed by 27-year old star winger Ilya Kovalchuk to stay with New Jersey in July is invalid, upholding what the NHL originally declared last month. While the Devils indicated they will go back to the drawing board to renegotiate an acceptable deal with Kovalchuk, the [...]
