Detroit Red Wings Week In Review

Detroit Red Wings Week In Review

Watching the Red Wings play back-to-back games this weekend was like watching two different teams.  At the game this past Friday, they played like a cohesive unit.  And the next night… the wheels fell off.  Six games into the relatively new season, to say there’s a lot of hockey left would be an understatement. Game [...]

Red Wings Victim of 7-1 Capitals’ Punishment

Red Wings Victim of 7-1 Capitals’ Punishment

In a battle of two unbeaten teams, the Washington Capitals left the Verizon Center unblemished as they whipped the Detroit Red Wings 7-1.  The Capitals took a page or two from the Red Wings’ playbook as they had all their lines playing on all cylinders. Mike Green, who was the best player on the ice, [...]

The Southeast Unleashed – May 2011 Inaugural Edition

The Southeast Unleashed – May 2011 Inaugural Edition

The NHL’s Southeast Division was formed in 1998 as a part of the Eastern Conference due to expansion. It has had two Stanley Cup winning teams, the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning and the 2006 Carolina Hurricanes. Each month we will link you to the relevant news and notes of all five Southeast Division teams.   [...]

Vinny For The Win In OT

Vinny For The Win In OT

Just a little over six minutes into the overtime period last night at the Verizon Center, Vincent Lecavalier roofed a shot over Washington Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 victory and a two-games-to-none lead in the Eastern Conference semi-final series. The goal was a direct result of a heads [...]

The journey begins: Capitals v. Rangers

The journey begins: Capitals v. Rangers

The real season begins Wednesday night for the Washington Capitals.  We have seen this movie before; winning the Eastern Conference and entering the playoffs as a legitimate contender to win the Stanley Cup.  A season ago the Capitals were in a very similar position to the one they find themselves in this year.  Suffice to [...]

Wideman hospitalized; Depleted defense corps

Wideman hospitalized; Depleted defense corps

Wideman was injured Tuesday night against Carolina. The injury occurred on a hit by Tuomo Ruutu that left Wideman in a heap on the ice. He was able to skate off under his own power, and the team called it a lower body injury. The diagnosis is a hematoma in his leg. Hematomas can be tricky because recovery time depends on the severity of the injury.

No need to rush Mike Green’s return

No need to rush Mike Green’s return

The good news surrounding the Capitals this week is more than just their current hot streak which has provided 10 wins in their last 11 games.  Tomorrow will mark the day that Mike Green is eligible to come of the long term injured list.  If Bruce Boudreau and George McPhee are smart, Mike Green won’t [...]

Blueline Musical Chairs

Blueline Musical Chairs

The Washington Capitals will soon be faced with a situation the most other GM’s in the NHL would love to face; an over-abundance of defenseman.  The Capitals are currently without the services of Mike Green and Tom Poti, but all reports have them slated to return by the start of the playoffs at the latest.  [...]

Capitals’ offensive woes – the simplest explanation

Capitals’ offensive woes – the simplest explanation

These days it is no secret that the Washington Capitals are struggling to score goals.  Long gone are days last year when the Caps could practically score at will on opponents.  The Caps finished the season last year ranked number one in the NHL scoring 3.82 goals per game.  A power play clicking at 25.2% [...]

Boom, there goes the Gionta-mite! Habs defeat Caps 3-2 in overtime

The Montreal Canadiens overcame an early 2-0 deficit in the first period to beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 in a shootout thanks to their captain Brian Gionta who scored twice in the second frame and added the game-winner in sudden-death. Mathieu Perreault scored on a turnover 2:29 into the game beating Carey Price between the [...]

Capitals Musings: Winter Classic | Powerless Power Play | Dedication to Defense

The day has arrived.  After months and months of endless hype, the Winter Classic is finally here.  The Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins will take their rivalry outdoors in the NHL’s marquee event.  This will be the Penguins’ second trip to the Winter Classic and the first for the Capitals.  The Penguins participated in [...]

Dazed & Confused in Chicago | The Red Machine is Coming

Dazed & Confused in Chicago | The Red Machine is Coming

One Team Came Ready To Play   The first ten minuts or so of the first period was fairly open with each side trading chances. The Hawks got their legs under them first and put the pedal to the floor. Tilting the ice in their favor and forcing the seemingly apathetic Blues to play most of the [...]

A new generation of offensive defensemen

A new generation of offensive defensemen

Led by All-Stars Drew Doughty (currently on the injury reserve due to concussion symptoms) and Mike Green, the NHL is currently experiencing a boom in young and exciting offensive defensemen. While size and physical edge are still highly in demand, a new generation of offensive-minded defensemen is emerging in the NHL. Let’s have a look [...]

$5 Million Well Saved

$5 Million Well Saved

With training camp just a few weeks away, it appears George McPhee is content with entering the 2010-2011 season with essentially the same roster as a season ago.  The core groups remains; Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green, and Alex Semin.  The Caps still hold one of the deepest rosters in the league as all [...]

With the regular season coming to a close, the talk of who will take home hardware is ramping up, and will culminate in Las Vegas this summer.  The race for the Norris Trophy is as wide open as it’s been in years.  The usual suspects of Nick Lidstrom and Chris Pronger have paved the way for a brood of [...]
