The New York Rangers have traded left wingers Aaron Voros and Ryan Hillier to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman Steve Eminger.
Voros, 29, played in only 41 games with the Rangers in 2009-10, scoring a mere seven points while logging 89 PIM. He had a career-high 16 points along with 122 PIM in 54 games with the Rangers the year before.
Voros was drafted 229th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft before being traded to the Minnesota Wild on Feb. 28, 2007. He signed with the Rangers as a free agent on July 1, 2008.
Hillier, 22, played 22 games in the ECHL and four AHL contests last season. Hillier was drafted 84th overall by the Rangers in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played four junior seasons in Halifax from 2004-08, scoring a career-high 72 points in 2007-08.
Eminger, 26, played in 63 games with Anaheim last season, scoring 16 points. He was signed by the Ducks as a free agent on Sept. 4, 2009. Eminger was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the first round (12th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. During his career, he played with Washington, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay before signing with the Ducks. In 346 NHL games, Eminger notched 15 goals and 70 assists for 85 points, also logging 301 PIM.
GM Glen Sather announced earlier today that restricted free agent Daniel Girardi had re-signed a four-year deal worth $13.3 million ($3.325 cap hit). The Rangers sitill have to re-sign RFA Marc Staal to complete their defensive corps.
Girardi, 26, skated in all 82 games with the Rangers this season, registering six goals and 18 assists for 24 points, along with 53 PIM. The 6-2, 215-pounder has played in 280 career NHL games with the Rangers, recording 20 goals and 60 assists for 80 points, along with 128 PIM. The Welland, Ontario native signed as a free agent with the Blueshirts on July 1, 2006.
With Eminger’s acquisition and Staal’s upcoming extension, the Rangers would have seven defensemen under contract for the 2010-11 season. New York signed prospect Ryan McDonagh to an entry-level contract earlier this week for $3.9 million over three seasons. McDonagh was acquired with forward Christopher Higgins and defenseman Pavel Valentenko in exchange for center Scott Gomez and forward Tom Pyatt last summer.
