A tale of two veterans: Foote re-signs, Blake resigns

Adam Foote, who turns 39 in July, has re-signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche. This will be Foote’s 19th NHL season.
Foote will receive a base salary of $1 million, but the deal includes a number of incentives that could at least double that amount. The veteran defenseman made $3.25 million with Colorado in 2009-10.
The Avalanches captain was a plus-8 in 67 games for the Avs, with no goals and nine assists.
His experience allowed him to mentor rookie defensemen Ryan Wilson and Kyle Cumiskey into larger role last season and his leadership was critical in the Avalanche returning to the postseason.

Blake and Foote going into opposite directions
On the other hand, Rob Blake is leaning heavily towards retirement at the age of 40. He just has not made an official announcement yet. The Sharks captain earned $4 million this past season, his second with San Jose.
Blake played 70 games this season, scoring seven goals and adding 23 assists for 30 points. He had a plus/minus differential of +14. Blake’s departure would free up considerable cap space for GM Doug Wilson.
The Sharks have several key players to re-sign come July 1st such as Evgeny Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, Scott Nichol, Devin Setoguchi, Joe Pavelski, Manny Malhotra and Jed Ortmeyer.

Guys like Foote and Blake that keep playing into their 40s (not quite for Foote but close enough) amaze me. Blake still put up solid offensive numbers this season and Foote was his usual solid self. Foote certainly isn’t what he once was but he’s smart enough to not be a liability either. What young players can learn from a guy like him is worth far more than the $1 million he’ll be paid.
