Carolina Hurricanes officially shopping Whitney and Wallin

According to TSN Darren Dreger, Hurricanes’ GM Jim Rutherford asked leading scorer Ray Whitney and defenceman Niclas Wallin to waive their no trade clauses. Rutherford added that he’ll likely trade away some veteran players before the March 3 deadline.

Ray Whitney will likely move by the trade deadline.

The other possible candidates to be traded are Matt Cullen, Scott Walker, Stephane Yelle, Andrew Alberts, Aaron Ward and Manny Legace.

In the past few weeks, Pittsburgh Boston, Los Angeles, Nashville and Calgary have all shown interest in Whitney.

Whitney would be a great fit alongside Sidney Crosby and Bill Guerin. Whitney, who is almost a PPG player since the lockout will likely fetch a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Whitney has 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 46 games this season for the Hurricanes.

He’s a clever top-six forward and very good on the point on a power play with a lot of speed. He has won a Stanley Cup and is an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. The perfect rental.

Carolina is currently ranked 30th in the NHL with a mere 35 points in 48 games. The only other team without 40 points is the Edmonton Oilers.
