Buffalo Glides Past Isles, 6-3

The Buffalo Sabres cruised to their 4th win in a row by stomping the New York Islanders, 6-3. The high point of this game, in my opinion, was Tyler Myers, Buffalo’s rookie defensman, first goal in the NHL. He scored the first goal of the game, giving Buffalo the lead.

The Sabres would lead 2-0 at the end of 1, 4-2 at the end of 2, and 6-3 to end the game. Myers scored on a backhand shot that rocketed past Islander goalie Roloson. His first NHL career goal gave him the third star of the game. Clarke MacArthur scored unassisted on a penalty shot, and Tim Connolly scored in the second period.  New York’s Matt Moulson tipped in a shot past Ryan Miller to bring the game to 3-1. Jochen Hecht  soon scored to make it 4-1, and the Isles answered back with a John Tavares goal on a powerplay. Patrick Kaleta [BUF], Sutton [NYI], and Pominville [BUF] all scored in the third stanza to give the game its final tally of 6-3.

I was unable to watch the game tonight, I was at my high school’s rivalry game, which was played for the 82nd time tonight [I'm an alumni, class of '08]. Alas, they lost, but I was glad to hear that the Sabres won along with the New York Yankees. As far as I am concerned, however, the Sabres are currently proving a lot of critics wrong. While I realize that we are only 5 or so games into the season, I fully believe that this Buffalo squad is proving they are a legitimate opponent. The Sabres’ offense seemed sharp, although the defense might have been spotty, letting 3 successful Islander attacks through.

The Sabres’ next game is tomorrow, against the Atlanta Thrashers. We’ll see ex-Sabre Maxim Afinogenov in his first return to HSBC Arena as the Sabres try to beat Atlanta, against whom they posted an embarassing 0-4 record in 2008-2009.
