I find it horribly offensive that the League wants to consider this. What does hockey have that none of the "major" sports have? History, a very rich history. I found renaming the divisions was horrible enough. In this day and age, with information tools in MANY households, people should go out and read about it. Learn about the history that makes the sport special. Attend a game or 2, ask questions....There are many people who would share the info to get you interested. We as fans in general, don't get along, disagree a lot and have a lot of fun with it, but we all share that common ground, we love hockey. Even if it takes a bandwagon to get some interest, it's a start. Whether you like certain players or not, there is ALWAYS something to talk about. In respect, to the trophies, the NHL did the right thing by creating the Richard Trophy, to honor the top goal scorer each year. Don't know who Richard is? Google it, Google Maurice Richard. The NHL needs to celebrate and treat it's fans as intelligent people (all jokes aside, all sports teams have at least 1 silly one).
You want to do me a favor,NHL? Get a TV contract that works. Pure and simple. Get on a network that EVERY provider will carry. Show everyone the "on-ice" product. If I have to see Washington, Chicago, Detroit or Pittsburgh more often than not, then so be it. Show us those teams in such a way that can reach the masses. Don't step down and presume we need anything "modernized" at all. We don't. We as hockey fans, carry our own and encourage people to watch. Make it easier on us, we don't mind promoting it.

Amen, brother.

It's highly disturbing that Bill Daly, the #2 man in the NHL, actually was quoted in thepensblog and The Toronto Star as saying it's "an idea being kicked around at this time". For all we know, the "idea" might be reality by next year.

Why does the NHL think that they have to make the awards more "relevant" to younger fans? Younger fans should and generally tend to learn about the history and the respect for the game's builders and patrons, just as we did when we were kids.

By their logic, in 2050, the MVP trophy will become the Crosby Trophy and the Rocket Richard Trophy will become the Ovechkin Award, etc.
