Let’s get something straight right away. I’m born and raised in Toronto….but a life-long Montreal Canadiens fan. I’ve spent most of my life looking down at people I considered to be suckers and idiots….namely Maple Leaf hockey fans. I found it completely ironic that I was assigned the Maple Leafs beat as part of my duties here at NHL HOME ICE. That being said….I also find myself happy with the early season success of the Leafs….mostly because of the joy I see it bring to their long-suffering fans. Sure it’s early…and their current 4-1-0 record is likely to change dramatically as the season rolls on….but in all honesty Leafs Nation has earned the right to celebrate. These are people who have stayed very loyal through some horrible times in Leafland. When I say loyal…I don’t mean just wearing Leafs paraphernalia..I mean shelling out serious cash for the “privilege” of sitting first at Maple Leaf Gardens…and then the Air Canada Center for what was often some of the worst hockey around.
I just know how tough it can be to love a team…and see it consistently stink. Just ask any of us Pittsburgh Pirates fans…all 500 of us.
I find myself glad that Leafs Nation has something to look forward to these days when they shell out the cash at the ACC. This is a markedly better hockey team than the one last season…and I honestly don’t blame the fans for having cautious optimism for the season…and of course loving the club’s fast start.
Look at this team for the last few seasons….go a little deeper into its history over the last 30 years or so…and I think most hockey fans would agree….let Leafs Nation enjoy the early-season success. Lord knows they’ve paid for it!
About the Author: Lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan...even though I was born and raised in Toronto. I wish the NHL had a balanced schedule because I would love to see more western teams come to Toronto. Would love to see Quebec City return to the NHL.
