Forsberg Returning? Just Say BORK!!

MoDO team doctor says Forsberg is healthy and good to go Bork!

Rumors afoot that Peter Forsberg is returning to the NHL after a successful run with MoDo of the SEL have a lot of folks wondering where he will end up.

Not me. I don’t care where he ends up, as long as it’s not on Broad Street in South Philadelphia.

Forsberg's time as a Flyer were filled with disappointment and failure.

Forsberg's time as a Flyer were filled with disappointment and failure.

The Flyers have several reasons to not even consider Forsberg, I’ll go through them now:

1. No real need for him.

The Flyers currently have Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Danny Briere, Claude Giroux, Blair Betts and Darroll Powe as NHL capable centers. You could probably add Ian Laperriere to that number as well. Forsberg would not be added as a 3rd liner, so either Richards or Carter would be the third center, and Giroux would join Briere as a winger.

2. Cap Room

The Flyers cleared some cap room in waiving Randy Jones. But how much will Forsberg want? If it’s anything over $2mm, then guys like James van Riemsdyk and Mika Pyorala, who have earned jobs, won’t get them. If it’s $4-$5mm, then the Flyers will either have to find a taker for Briere(who has a no movement clause) or Gagne(who in addition to a no trade clause would be a main reason for Forsberg to consider the Flyers) or trade a guy like Jeff Carter or Scott Hartnell.

Could one of these guys be gone to fit Forsberg?

3. Forsberg is ALWAYS hurt

If it’s not his well documented ankle and foot issues, it’s something else, like his spleen. Forsberg misses more time than Ferris Bueller.

It’s not just the injuries. There were things like the time he asked out of the shootout because he didn’t feel right. Sorry, but that doesn’t fly with me.

This guy showed up more often than Foppa

4. When Forsberg isn’t playing, he is a DISTRACTION!

When Forsberg was in his second season as a Flyer, he was the center of attention, especially when he wasn’t in the line-up. Everyone had to answer questions about his injury, how his absence affected the team, when he’d return, if he was going to be traded, how many meatballs could Foppa eat…it was annoying.

Yeah, I went there, Damnit!

Yeah, I went there, Damnit!

It’s time for the Flyers to ignore these get rich quick schemes and just go to work with what they have, for now.

D-Day for Jones

Today at noon or thereabouts, we should know the fate of defenseman Randy Jones. He was waived Saturday, to create cap room for James van Riemsdyk, Mika Pyorala and Blair Betts, who is expected to be signed in the next day or two. If Jones is claimed, it would clear a massive headache for the Flyers cap wise. If he isn’t claimed, hopefully the Flyers will keep him with their AHL affiliate for the whole season, as there is no need to risk carrying half of Jones’ cap hit if he’s claimed on re-entry waivers.

Jones carries a $2.75mm cap hit and will receive $3mm in compensation in this, the final year of his contract. He will be a UFA July 1st.

In addition to being a solid third pair defenseman, Jones is a garmmy award winning singer, a cowboy and won the 1976 National League Cy Young award with the San Diego Padres

If anything I would bet that this newest comebcak will have an end goal of playing for Sweden in Vancouver. A shot at the NHL might be in the back of his mind but I really don’t see teams lining up for him with the guarantee that he’ll be injured at least 50% of the time.

What # will JVR wear when Forsberg is a Flyer?
