Ryan, I think either Kovy or Marleau would make them much more of a threat. Of course, they have some tinkering to do on the blue line, figure out if you bring back O'Donnell for one more go, and when the time comes figure out who gets the 5th, 6th and 7th d-men spots.

RIght now,
Johnson, Doughty, Scuderi, Greene

Then:
Martinez, Harrlod, Hickey, Dreweski, Teubert, O'Donnell (if brought back), Voynov (sp? i'm being lazy and not looking), and a few other guys will all be giving their all to crack the line up and earn the 5th, 6th and 7th slots.

Up front will be interesting to see how it develops.

But I think you are right, I think a high flight free agent will sign in LA. The city, the money, and the up and coming situation the team has which looks great can all be beneficial when going after the big gun.

Lombardi was on Edmonton radio this morning (you can read a little bit about the interview here http://www.theteam1260.com/blog/view/article/nielson_says_may_27th/) and he certainly came across as confident that the Kings would be a desirable location for free agents. If the Kings were able to land a player like Kovalchuk I think they'd have to be a real threat in the Western Conference almost immediately.
